Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a condition that results in recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and the surrounding pelvic region. The symptoms vary from case to case and even in the same individual. Some of the symptoms mimic those of urinary traction infection, but medical tests are negative.

The bladder and urethra lie very close to the pelvic floor muscles. When these muscles become tight they can create cystitis. Because of the viscero-somatic reflex, bladder disease can cause musculoskeletal impairments. Certain spinal and other joint restrictions can cause reflexive spasms in and around the bladder resulting in increased urgency and bladder spasms.

Symptoms may include urinary urgency, frequency, or a combination of these symptoms. Pain may change in intensity as the bladder fills with urine or as it empties. These symptoms often get worse during menstruation. They may sometimes experience pain with vaginal intercourse
